Keyword density is the percentage of the number of times a keyword or a phrase appears on a web page as compared to the total number of words on the page.

To calculate keyword density, you simply take the number of times a keyword appears and divide it to the total number of words on the page, then simply multiply it by 100. 

You can also use online tools that can simplify this process. One of them is WebFx.

As some SEO plugins suggest to increase keyword density, many people find it difficult to do it without making it sound unnatural or robotic. 

Keyword density could be increased by just throwing your targeted keyword here and there around your content. 

But, things are not that easy. Back in the days google used to check keyword density to determine if that page is worth showing up on SERPs (Search engine results pages) or not. (More about this ahead)

So, webmasters and SEO experts back in the days would just stuff their keywords here and there on their blog posts and would wait for the content to rank. And, why wouldn’t they because that was the only way to rank an article high on the SERPs. 

Things have changed now, and they are supposed to be. Search engines are getting smarter day by day. Now search engines’ favorite thing to consider while ranking are backlinks — not a couple of backlinks from an abandoned blogspot blog but backlinks from authoritative websites like Forbes or New York Times. 

But don’t take it the wrong way. Creating amazing content is equally important as compared to backlinks. 

Stuffing keywords here and there is not a genius technique. But it’s a complete waste of time. The practice of putting your focused keyword here and there is known as keyword stuffing.

Keyword Stuffing

Keyword stuffing is a big turn off for search engines. And it can get you in different kinds of troubles. Such as:

  • Bad user experience
  • Negative impact on SEO
  • A lot of hate

Bloggers are always known for their generosity for sharing millions of worth of knowledge for free. And people expect us to write content in the nicest way possible. Stuffing keywords is exactly opposite of it. Just see an example below:

That’s the difference between a nicely written article and an article with no value. 

There are two types of keyword stuffing:

  1. Visible
  2. Invisible

We talked about the visible one but did you know what is the invisible one? A magic?

Invisible Keyword Stuffing

It might sound obvious but invisible keyword stuffing means stuffing keywords on the page that are invisible for the visitors. People used to do it for search engines back in-the-days.

For instance, writing with white color on white paper, or stuffing your keyword behind a picture, those kinds of things are known as invisible keyword stuffing. 

Note: invisible keyword stuffing can drag your blog down in the SERPs or in most cases search engines ban these kinds of sites from indexing. SO DO NOT TRY IT.

The question still remains: what is the ideal keyword density for SEO?

Actually there is no ideal keyword density. (sorry if you came for the exact answer but that’s the truth)

Actually keyword density doesn’t even matter that much as long as you don’t overdo it. 

A study from mangools found out that a post can rank for keywords that are NOT USED AT ALL in the blog post. 

Just put your keyword wherever it feels natural doesn’t matter if you’re using it once, twice, or even 10 times. If a reader can point out your focused keyword, you’re overdoing it. 

A marketing genius Neil Patel says just forget about your keyword and write for humans. When you’re done sprinkle your keyword a few times where you feel like it. 

Using small 2-word keywords could be easy to use in between your content. But, since there is a lot of competition in the market, most of the bloggers go for long tail keywords and using a long tail again and again throughout the content can decrease your readability. 

Just think of it like this: the best keyword density is when your content is easy-to-read and flows.

What Should You Do Instead?

Instead of stuffing your keywords here and there you should use it in different places on the page. Like:

  • Url — using your focused keyword in the url is one of the most effective onpage SEO strategies and it can boost your rankings.
  • Title — your post title is another fantastic place to put your keywords
  • Tags — yes, search engines count the density of a whole web page. 
  • Meta description — metas are small white boxes that appear underneath a post’s title on the SERPs. Usually they contain information about the post. And they are another fantastic place to keep your focused keyword.
  • Comments — you didn’t see this coming, did you? Comments are another great place to put your keywords.
  • Images Alt text — alternatives text (a.k.a alt text) can be used to show search engines what your focused keyword is. 

Instead of thinking about how many times you should use a keyword, think about other ranking signals like post’s length, internal & external linking, and other onpage SEO techniques.

Because how many times a keyword is used in the post doesn’t matter that much.

That means, search engines try to understand why the user is searching it and what s/he is looking for to provide the best answer possible. 

So, instead of looking and counting your keyword density, try to create a blog post that solves a person’s problem and you’ll be rewarded with a good rank.
